Photo of the Month

"Kiawah Island is rich with wildlife photo opportunity. While driving from one destination I found with good shorebird activity to another favorite for viewing deer in the marshes, I crossed this little inlet on a causeway. On this morning, I knew right away the day was going to be perfect for landscapes. I set aside the long lenses and got out my 24 -105mm short zoom and climbed onto the top of my car. The reflection of the sky on the glass-smooth water was ideal and the puffy white clouds were moving across the azure sky giving me ample opportunities to choose the compositions I liked best. Without the clouds, this photo would likely not have made it to the Calendar.

High-level winds typically control cumulus cloud movement. If you are lucky enough to find yourself with fast moving cumulus clouds, know that you have only a short time before a great combination of lighting and landscape composition reveals itself. Not only do the clouds provide a range of lighting options but you get to choose where you want them in the frame."

Cumulus and Spartina - Horan Photo Blog - Where to Go Hilton head Island

Photo tip-exposure: For more dramatic landscape images, try some elevation. This allows you to make a palette out of the foreground when working in the flat landscapes typical of the lowcountry. Some of my favorite methods include climbing trees, getting on top of a my vehicle, using extension ladders against something stable, a nearby rooftop or bridge and finally, a small plane when budget allows.

The spring landscape in coastal South Carolina is very inviting to the artist, photographer or outdoor enthusiast and May, in particular, is a wonderful time to photograph the salt marsh. The Spartina grass is sprouting its summer greens, the atmosphere is often clear and cool and the wildlife activity is in full swing with feeding and training of young family members to the ways of the world.
